- <H2> Progress Report No. 8 September/October 2016 Dear Northumberland Syrian Lifeline supporter, With autumn leaves beginning to turn, it’s time for an update on our ongoing effort to help a total of eight refugees from the Middle East start new lives here in Northumberland County. First, the really good news. Nilou and Saghar, the two Iranian sisters who arrived safely at Pearson Airport on July 14, are thriving. Already, they’re leaping ahead in their English skills, making friends and soaking up Canadian culture. The progress they’re making is due in no small part to the efforts of two volunteer teams who drive them back and forth to language classes in Cobourg and give them extra instruction at home in Port Hope. In particular, we’d like to thank Erin Oxland, who leads the ESL team, and Susanna Lacroix, who just past the job over to Jan Shaw, who keeps a fleet of volunteer drivers running on time, for the huge contributions they’re making to the endeavour. Some of you may wonder why you haven’t heard much about the life experiences of these two exceptional young women, or seen their stories in local and regional media. There’s a reason: Our sponsor group wants to protect their privacy and security while they’re in our care. To add to our excitement, a young Iranian man we have sponsored through the Blended Visa Office Referral ( BVOR) arrived October 4th, after 10 days in Port Hope, Alireza is joining Nilou and Saghar in LINC English classes and is curious and very keen to learn just about everything around him. Now, the rest of the news. As you know, Northumberland Syrian Lifeline has 5 more privately sponsored Middle Eastern refugees in the pipeline. But there is still no indication as to how long it will take for their files to be processed and flights to Canada booked. We have been waiting since last February. Jamie Simmons, communications director to Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Kim Rudd, told us last week Immigration Minister John McCallum’s department is “committed to having all privately-sponsored refugees that were in the system prior to March 3l processed by the end of the year at the latest.” Mr. Simmons has been told the government’s time-line assumes “things like security clearance from the other countries is not delayed as they have no control over that.” So we wait, with $77,926 in a trust account, thanks to generous folks in Northumberland County who are trying to help with the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War. We still need more funds, so please continue to financially donate on an on-going basis. Needless to say, the process is frustrating for us, as it is for hundreds of other refugee sponsorship groups across Canada who in recent months have learned the virtue of patience. A final note. I’d like to thank Caroline Thornton and Lynda Sellar for their hard work and dedicated service as board members during the start-up phase of our mission focused on helping female refugees. If you’re looking for a new challenge, or know of someone who might be interested in a director’s role, please let me know. Sincerely, Julie AldisChair Northumberland Syrian Lifeline is an Ontario not-for-profit corporation. Directors: Julie Aldis (chair); June Mackenzie (treasurer); Don Sellar (communications).
